This alpaca color genotype predictor offers three ways to predict your cria's color depending on what you know about your animals.
Use the Genotype tab if you have genetic test results for your sire and dam. Select each animal's MC1R and ASIP genotypes and the calculator will show the probability breakdown for each possible offspring color combination. Genotype testing gives the most accurate predictions — contact a livestock genetics lab to get your animals tested.
Use the Classic Grey tab if either parent carries the grey gene. Grey inheritance follows a separate pattern from base color, so select your pairing type to see the odds of grey, silver, or rose grey offspring — and why breeding two grey animals carries a small but important risk.
Use the Phenotype tab if you don't have genetic test results. Select each parent's visible color and the tool will estimate offspring color probabilities based on known inheritance patterns. Keep in mind these are educated estimates — animals can carry hidden genetics that only show up in their offspring.
All results are probability-based, not guarantees. For breeding decisions that matter, genotyping is always worth the investment. If you're serious about producing consistent color — especially true black — learn more about GCPM- Generationally Confirmed Phenotpe Model.
